Book Review: Get Your Frog Out of the Well by Chuck Boyer

Most of Us are either businessman or an Employee or some are struggling to get a start. Today, I am going to share with you all a beautiful book ‘Get your Frog Out of the Well’. Its writer Chuck Boyer has spent 16 years with IBM and has written white pages for HP, Compaq, Digital Symphony & MasterCard. If You already know your business and Now, you want to expand it Globally. How you can expand your horizons with mastering the Softer Arts… Answer lies in this book.

Ist point is ‘Quick & Smart’ these two are not the same thing. Technical Business Reason that Why some succeed and some don’t… Its mainly because of their ability to communicate their will and their point of view and by demonstrating the value of their thoughts.

To succeed, first you must have a will or desire and you must develop a point of view. Americans are considered frogs in a well. They don’t see much beyond the borders of their country. We all have similar qualification. Only difference is that some are sea frogs and others Well Frogs.

Swami Vivekanand told this story of Sea Frog vs Well Frogs in 1890 when he was in Chicago. He also said that Understanding issues is a strong skill BUT Ability to define issues and set expectation is a powerful communication skill. On these standards, big companies come into the picture. Someone’s dream, ego and desire to become rich and powerful.. These give birth to memorable CEOs.

Six words and their impact in a company environment:

  1. Awesome (This word is used in almost everything. So, don’t get carried away).
  2. Its all about (If someone has not got a clue as to what’s going on. eg Its all about Productivity, Its all about flexibility. Whenever listen this word, your antennae should be put on high alert)
  3. Look (Nowadays, used by someone who is trying  to use position and power to get you to buy into the message. Usually, ends with ‘OK?’. ‘Listen’ is another version of ‘Look’)
  4. Going Forward (Relatively innocent expression, used mainly in a nervous situation.
  5. Obvious Ambiguity
  6. Show me through Powerpoint Slides

Whenever stuck in the Web of these 6 words, avoid getting into the soup yourself, say as straight as you can. Truth can get into troubles with Lawyers, Stakeholders or the Bosses BUT NOT with your customers.

Whether you are a CEO or you are an employee, you have to work with 3 kind of people. Helper-Experts, Race Car Drivers and Judges. Now, how to identify them and how to work with them? Best way to work with Helper-Expert is “I know the results we are looking for but, I need your help in figuring out how to get from here to there”.

Best way to work with Race Car Drivers is “This is going to be a difficult and extra-ordinary project. I need someone like you with a winning attitude. I know we need to stretch sometime but if we achieve this, we will win big time”.

Best way to work with Judges ” The situation is… These are the issues and these are our expectations. Last time, when we faced similar situation, these challenges were there..
