India is known for its Culture, Heritage and Religious values. Recently Government has started to pull down all the Mutts. A group Mahants of Mutts in Puri Sent a letter to Chief Justice of India (CJI) Ranjan Gogoi and demanded to stop Odisha’s government to stop demolition of mutta around jagannath temple.
In the letter, Mahants drew the attention of Chief Justice of India to the rich heritage, religious values and culture Mutts in Puri around jagannath temple. There are many mutts which were built by great saints and mahants like Ramanajucharya, Chaitanya, Ramanda Acharya, Nimbark Acharya, Bishnu Swami in Puri. These saints are worshipped by people. No one can see these Mutts getting hit or pulled by big bulldozers and cranes. These Mutts arfe linked to jagannath culture. Their safety should be in hands of Government of odisha. Government should protect these temples and promote them as a part of Temple. The district administration could not able to demolish Bada Akhada, because saints and seers were against this and they protested.
Government claims that it would be rebuilt Mutts elsewhere. BJP MLA asked from Puri Jayant Sarangi that how can Govt make such false claims? How can someone rebuild a centuaries-old structures after its demolition. How will Govt retain the Heritage value of demolished structure?
“We came here on orders of the Supreme Court to verify whether the state government’s decision of converting World Heritage City Puri into a Pilgrimage City is being done appropriately or not. An eviction drive was initiated only after a negotiation with the locals. The administration has not demolished any building forcibly. We found that this is being undertaken after proper negotiation with all. The government’s future projection is valid and I don’t think this eviction should be stopped in any case,” he said.
The Congress and BJP targeted the state government for allegedly failing to take care of the displaced families and mutts. Congress MLA Suresh Rautray said,”We will stage protests unless the government stops the demolition drive. Mutts are the pride and identity of Odisha. Government should preserve the mutts,”said
BJP leader Prithviraj Harichandan said the government should have rehabilitated the displaced families before throwing them out of their houses and shops. Harichandan said, “Destruction of the mutt culture set a bad precedent.” BJD spokesperson Subash Chauhan described the remarks of the opposition parties as politically motivated. “The government is committed to preserve and redevelop the mutts. Special rehabilitation and resettlement plans are already announced by the government,” Chauhan said.
